MARK MAZULLO

Friday, October 22 – 7:30 p.m. | Janet Wallace Fine Arts Center

Lecture-recital on Dmitri Shostakovich's Preludes and Fugues, Op. 87

Mark Mazullo, Associate Professor of Music History and Piano and Chair of the Music Department at Macalester College, presents a lecture-recital based upon his book, Shostakovich's Preludes and Fugues: contexts, style, performance, published in 2010 by Yale University Press. Dr. Mazullo will perform selected Preludes and Fugues from Shostakovich's piano cycle, which constitutes his largest instrumental work. He will also discuss aspects of the cycle's compositional genesis, its stylistic features and its relationship to other similar cycles of contrapuntal keyboard music, and its performance history.

Dr. Mazullo holds a Ph.D. in musicology from the University of Minnesota and a Masters degree from the Peabody Conservatory. His writing on diverse musical topics has appeared in many publications, including The Yale Review, Musical Quarterly, American Music, and Popular Music. He is also active as a pianist, mostly recently in performances of Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 4 with the Civic Orchestra of Minneapolis and the Minnesota Philharmonic, John Cage's complete Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano in collaboration with the Macalester College Dance program, and a recital of art song and opera arias with soprano Allison Charney. Dr. Mazullo served for three years on the nationally elected Board of Directors of the College Music Society, and he currently serves on the board of the Frederic Chopin Society.
